What we do
Funds raised nationally through Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia are divided equally between the five partners and directed into the areas of most need in each hospital.
Each of our hospital partners utilise donations to transform competent care into extraordinary care. The focus is on the provision of excellence in each hospital key area - whether that be through funding ground-breaking research projects leading to childhood disease cures, or by engaging the brightest medical science minds that Australia has to offer to constantly improve upon treatments, or by purchasing state-of-the-art equipment that provides faster, more thorough diagnoses for our sick children.
Some of the achievements from these hospitals include:
- Scar Wars – scarless healing for children with serious burns;
- Critical one-hour test to diagnose meningococcal bacteria;
- World-first liver transplant procedure for children and first liver cell transplant;
- Treatment to stop the bone fracture cycle for children with brittle bone disease;
- First successful bone marrow transplant for childhood leukaemia in Australasia;
- Largest integrated children’s cancer service and research centre in the Southern Hemisphere;
- Pioneering chemotherapy to treat young children with malignant brain tumours;
- First successful use of cord blood transplant technique in Southern Hemisphere;
- First kidney transplant performed on a child under 12 months in Australia;
- First and only dedicated paediatric HIV/AIDS unit in Australia with world leading research into preventing transmission from mother to child;
- Pioneering surgery for unborn children;
- Leaders in craniofacial surgery;
- Neonatal hearing and Cochlear implantation;
- First High Risk Asthma clinic;
- National Centre for heart and lung transplants;
- Australia’s first gait laboratory;
- Most comprehensive care program for neonates;
- Internationally recognized work on ethical and legal aspects of newborn care;
- Discovered rotavirus as the cause of gastroenteritis and a world leader in vaccine development;
- Key hole (endoscopic) surgery facility for children - the only one in Asia Pacific.
